Andrey Providing a quick update. Been using 1.14.6 stably for a couple days, but today the application wants to go through another round of “Checking for changes” and because of this would start to freeze again. Same behavior as described before.

Haven’t added anything new to the library, so I am assuming the scan is a routine nature of the application. Which makes sense.

So for myself, 1.14.6 and 1.14.3 are unusable versions.
As an academic excercise, I installed version 1.13.8 and this version was able to complete the “checking for changes” without issue.

So the known facts so far is:

The application freezes while “checking for changes” when a library’s “store faces in images metadata” is turned on for the following tested versions:
1.14.6 and 1.14.3

Does not happen for tested versions:
1.13.7 and 1.13.8

Since the scan is complete now, I do not know how to trigger another scan, so I will continue this exercise by going back to the latest version and wait til the next time it freezes and report back when I learn more.

But as it stands today, the latest version is unusable for me without doing this downgrade, scan and upgrade. Which is a bit disappointing.

It’s a pitty my Tonfotos is freezing all the time… I don’t have a commercial licence and I’d like do adquire it, but I’m still not safe if the software will run ok for me…
I set a folder to scan, but while Tonfotos is scanning if I click anywhere in the software it returns that “Tonfotos is not answering” and then asks me if I want to close the window ou wait for the program to answer.
I feel really sorry because the software will fit what I need (organize photos and recognize faces) but I just cannot get it working properly.

I have tried now 1.14.6, and it freezes up here too after leaving the software on over night..
And normally it would freeze making the gui unresponsive.. but the cpu shows that its working.. but after a night it goes into suspended. I’ve reverted back to 1.14.3 without cuda installed. Maybe limiting the number of threading or actually dedicating memory for the application would help?

I can’t revert to a prior version because I use the free version and it’s a condition that the free version user update it… I’m not encouraged to buy the licence with such a bug.

Andrey has to answer for this, but I feel like he is reasonable and if you purchase and dont find it working for you i’m guessing you could ask him advance for how you can try to solve/test this. (email support and ask).
Purchasing and asking for refund is a better option I would think.
The freezing struggle is something we try to challange now.. if its because of windows, java how the code is handled by windows. I’m wondering if this issue is on linux.. hmm. think i’m going to test it out on that. Linux Mint should be straight forward.

Any Updates? I have a very similar problem. Windows 11 GPU plugin, no storage in foto metadata and tonfotos is frozen for a full 2 days now scanning. If I restart the programme, I have approx 1.5 sec to change anything before it turns white again and is completely unresponsive. It keeps using 6% CPU and 0.6% GPU in this state.

alexander I am afraid we did not make much progress with that. We checked different ideas but none of them looks to be the culprit. The biggest challenge is that for most of users this but does not exists, and we cannot reproduce it in our labs. It is really hard to fix something if can’t even see it. Though we will continue looking.

Have you tried 1.14.3 as suggested above? Did it help in your case?

Andrey It exists for me as well. Since todays morning the application freezes within seconds after (re-)start. It shows these activities meanwhile:

OK, it is a real problem that apparently surfaces with version 1.14.x
I reverted to 1.13.9 an so far it looks as if everything works find. No freezing and estimated scanning time is down from some estimated 20+h to 7h

Interesting is that the HW usage is up to 9-20% CPU and approx. 17% GPU.

Version 1.14.2 without CUDA is running fine for 24h and have not run into suspended mode.
I’m doing the last part now, with selecting face recognition.. still running and doing up to 48% cpu.

Yes will try this and report back. I see that I can get 3, 5 and 6 similar face names.. and It works fine to combine them.
tip: But auto-combine faces could be a nice option to have in settings 😉.

1.14.7 - crashed. Restarting and started logging, will update here again.

Stig So it crashed, not nanged? That is definitely an improvement, since crash is much easier to locate. Please locate relevant (with matching date) crash dump here: C:\Users\<name>\AppData\Roaming\tonfotos\Crashpad\reports and send it to me (to support@tonfotos.com)

Update!
1.14.7 - crashed, but I think that was network fault cause windows/machine lost connection to the NAS(?).

Restartet and now been running all night. Logging is active and I can see that its filling up
(get-Content -wait tonfotos.log …and following the update while its happening)
DB is now almost 5.76Gb at the moment.. and its still going.
The process is running and using CPU.
But the GUI is frozen when the program has been running alone on the machine for several hours… (still without CUDA). I try to click around and nothing happens….but after several minutes waiting.. it becomes responsive again!

v1.14.3-v.1.24.6 had that problem for me aswell.
v.1.14.7 I have not seen this happening.
