Tongotos freezes or hands and UI becomes unresponsive

New to Tonfotos. Got my photos indexed after leaving it over night. Now that I have things ready. I was going to start with turning on “Store faces in images metadata”. It would start scanning photos but the whole application just locks up after that. UI is unresponsive, nothing works, cannot even minimize the app. Cannot show my desktop either with WIN+D key. It would leave a black window up. Is there any troubleshooting I can do? Or is it something I just need to leave running for a few hours again?

Running Windows 11.

Guardian First, how many CPU cores do you have? If less than 4 than that could be problematic, as program runs multiple processes in parallel.

Second, where your photos are stored? Is it local SDD/HDD? Is your C: drive on SDD? Main database is on C: and data transfer speed could be the issue.

Andrey It’s a i5-12600, so I have 10 cores available.

Photos are stored on a NAS and I’m accessing it via local network. C drive is an SSD.

Is there a reliable algorithm to reproduce the issue? Like do x, then y then wait N minutes and here you go… Or it is pretty random? How long it takes in general for program to get into that state?

That’s the tricky part. This starts happening right after I turn on “Store faces in images metadata” for the library.

It will scan a few photos and freeze.
I would force close it using Task Manager and boot up the application again.
It will scan a few photos and freeze. This typically happens within the minute I start the application.

I turned on the logging and noticed the log would stop the moment it freezes.

I once tried leaving it running for 2-3 hours and the log did not update in that time, nor did the app show any sign of unfreezing.

What I do know is that one of the processes when I look on Task Manager goes into “suspended” status. But the others are still running. But I don’t know how to check what the processes are doing and if other actions are happening.

It freezes here too, but the program is working in the background. I can see the CPU and processes are working… but the windows gets “white”. Win11 here too. This happens if its been running over the night here aswell. And I just right click on taskbar/icon and select close. Then open it again. v1.14.4 with CUDA.

Do you have antivirus running ? It never stops working here, it runs.. but the applications gui is unresponsiv.
Whats the last it writes to the log when it freezes… any errors before ? any long files it trying to read from a network drive and then “hangs”..
Any problems with other applications.. like is the graphic card updates (or correct drivers)
Device manager showing devices that are yet to be recognized and updated drivers ?

I use Window’s native virus scanner.

There are no obvious errors in the logs. It looks like typical output and just stops. It’s not consistent where it stops too.

Drivers are up to date and windows update isn’t showing any updates I need to install. Other applications function just fine.

Putting Battery/mode into performance or turning off antivirus for a while?
Suspended feels like that the OS is giving the program less room (memory/cpu cycle).. how about turning off other programs in background.. I dont know, but using eliminating method to try to find whats causing it 😉

Yes. When I turn it off. The application does not freeze and this is how I’ve been running it so far.

Guardian Thank you very much for logs. Even if it looks like metadata update is the reason, logs suggest otherwise. There is something odd happening, it looks like backend is bombarded with folder rescan requests from UI, i have no idea why this is happening. Looks like metadata update is just the trigger for the collapse, but real reason is not there. What is most strange, this situatuion is unique to you, no one else had similar complains.

Can you please record and share a video of what is happening on the screen when this all is happening? Probabaly that will give me some clue why UI is bombarding backend with requests… You can use your phone to record what is happening, starting from the program launch.
