I downloaded Tonfotos-1.11.5 Setup.exe, joined the Tonfotos Community, and double clicked on Tonfotos-1.11.5 Setup.exe, to run the install. I got “Installation has failed” error with directions to contact the author.

The SquirrelSettings.log file has these lines at the end:

    philfry Thank you for trying out Tonfotos! I’m afraid this information does not really help to identify the issue. Let us start from beginning, what Windows version do you have? Can you please provide screenshot of the error?

        philfry Thank you, I got the log, but as I am afraid this log has nothing to do with Tonfotos, is has something about Discord and all records there are dated 2024 and earier. Nothing from 2025.

        Can you please start the applicaiton from console and check if there any meaningful output there?

        Do you have issues installing any other application?

        To be honest, this is the first time someone reports about this kind of issue, sorry I don’t have answer ready for you. Some research is needed first here.

            I am looking for help about starting this application from the console. I am unable so far to use a command that looks like: Start “Tonfotos-1.11.5 Setup.exe”, I think because of the space.

                I think it is better to do that without “start”, just exe file name should be enough. You just need to be in the folder where this file is located. If it is in Donwloads directory, then commands should be something like this:

                cd Downloads
"Tonfotos-1.11.5 Setup.exe"

                  This is the only SquirrelSetup.log file on my computer created recently. It was created on Monday when I first started trying to install Tonfotos. I don’t have a more current version even though I have tried repeatedly to install Tonfotos several different ways. It is the log I already sent to you.

                  SquirrelSetup.log is a shortcut pointing to:

                  It was created a few days ago and modified a few minutes ago as shown.


                  That may explain why the third line: “About to install to: C:\Users\pfryo\AppData\Local\Discord,” doesn’t make any sense.

                  So it appears that running the install doesn’t even create a new log file in this case, it just modifies the existing shortcut pointing to an earlier installation.

                  Something was working earlier today that is not working now (by comparing the folder at two times).

                    The first command did not work since you did not use quotation marks, as I shown in my sample above. When there is no quotation mark, Windows considers Tonfotos-1.11.5 Setup.exe as two different words separated by space, but when you do "Tonfotos-1.11.5 Setup.exe" it will consider it as one command, even though there is space in the name. Since file name has space, you need to type it in quotes in command line.

                    Alternatively, you can just rename the file to something like “setup.exe” and then calling setup or setup.exe from command line will launch it.

                    Thank you for additional details on SquirrelSetup.log. It looks like squirrel (the installation framework we use, and apparently Discord too) in fact edits this file, but the fact still is, it does not write there any new information. Unfrtunately, this log file appears to be useless in this situation.

                    I very sorry that I am unable to come up with simple solution right now, this is because your situation is pretty unique, I don’t have experience with it. And since I don’t have any access to your computer, I can only analyze the information you are providing, that is it.

                    I have an idea though. It looks like several applications on your computer are using squirrel for installation, and there is some sort of interference between them. I would suggest you to just delete this C:\Users\pfryo\AppData\Local\SquirrelTemp folder completely to minimise this interferrence, and then try to start setup file once again (just by doubleclick in file exporer). My hope is, once we remove any interference from other applications, installation will just work. Please let me know about the results.

                      Clearing the SquirrelTemp folder helped. The installation started and ran for a bit. And it seems to be the same from the cmd window as from the Windows 10 environment. It stops after a few seconds with a flash in a corner of the screen and giving the same “Installation has failed” error.

                        philfry That is sad. By the way, since you tried command line again, was there any output once you started installation? Any error messages?

                          I repeated running the install at a cmd window as administrator. The cmd window opened in the systems32 directory and I moved to my download directory. I ran the install command and the cmd window flashed after a few seconds, and I got the same result as earlier. The “Installation has failed window” appeared on my desktop, files appeared in the SquirrelTemp, CrashDumps, and Temp folders as before. Nothing else observed.

                            philfry Hmmm… I still think there is some sort of interference with other sofrware installed. However, I have an idea that can help to clarify that. You can create new user on your windows system, log in, and try to install Tonfotos there. If it will go OK, then this is indeed Squirrel is conflicting with other apps installed using same library. The thing is, Squirrel only installs in user space, new user will have clean plate, no other Squirrel-based apps will be able to interfere.

                            On the other hand, if there will be same error under new user, that will mean this is not an interference, there is something wrong with your system probably. By the way, do you have enough free space on disk C:? Lack of space can definitely be a problem.

                            You can delete new user after this experiment.

                                philfry That is a bummer. I guess it would be much easier if that would be Squirrel issue, but apparently it is something else. And unfortunately, we don’t even have any meaningful logs or error messages in console to point us in the right direction. We are blind here, unfortunately.

                                Well, technically I can give you just zip file with all Tonfotos files to install them manually (just copy into necessary folder and create desktop shortcut, there is not much else to do), but that is not really a solution, since you will not be able to install updates this way. However, if you are not yet ready to give up, I can do that, just let me know.

                                What is more important, is to find a reason for that, but unfortunately I am running out of ideas what else to try, and there is no clue to what could be the reason, unfortunately.

                                This is definitely not something regular, as there would be many other users that faced that before, but this is the first time. May be this knowledge can help us. Is there anythign special about your system? Is it maybe part of corporate network? Is there any special security apps installed?

                                    Regarding free space, it is on drive C. I only ran WinDirStat on drive C. Also, my computer is being used as a regular home computer, connected to the internet, but not part of any company network. Also, no special security, just Avast, Malwarebytes and the like

                                    I would like to continue to try to identify this problem because it is most likely something with my computer that could eventually show up and have to be dealt with. What about the Windows dmp files that are created at the same time as the installation fails?

                                    I tried to read one and found I needed to download WinDbg. It tells me something about the failure:

                                          Andrey Finally I got time to check the crash dump. I see the similar (but not the same) stack trace as you - it does not even include the exe file:

                                          This does mean that that the program itself has little to do with the error, it happens inside Windows. What is interesting though, I can now see the error code - it is “Module not found”. I guess that there is some library missing in your Windows installation. Unfortunately, stack trace can’t show the name of missing library. However, if we use dumpbin /imports on Update.exe, then we can see the only import it has:

                                              Andrey I just realized that the crash actually contains lines from ‘mscoree.dll’. That means it is not missing. Sorry, I was too quick to jump into conclusion. It is the mscoree.dll that actually fails when it tries to load more libraries.

                                              Looking more into the disassebly there is a chance that the library it tries to load is advapi32.dll:

                                              After some quick googling I found this. Can you please try the fix they offer there?

                                                  Thanks for the suggestions. I ran the recommended tests with no errors showing up. Following is a shortened version of the results; cleaned up to save space. I show the command and the end results.

                                                  I thought I’d try something. I ran Everything and saved the results for just the few minutes after trying to install Tonfotos. It shows every file modified as shown below.


                                                  Most of these files are not related to SquirrelTemp, and most that I checked required permissions I did not have. One that looked useful is Report.wer; and I would like to send it to you. It is 140 lines long and seems to point to KERNELBASE.dll. Also, the folder ReportArchive, contains the “Reort.wer” for several/all instances where I encountered this problem.
