E.s.e. I see your point, thank you. However, this is assuming that all those similar names are actually duplicates, then sofware would just better merge them without asking, rather than highlighting. However, this is not always the case. There could be several John’s who are not the same person, and you might want to rename them to full name instead of merging.
My guess is that if people are migrating from Picasa, then there are indeed many real duplicates, but in all other cases, I would say this autmated feature would do more harm than good.
