  • Face recognition, not working after moving photos.

Then I moved the photos to my hard drive.

Then I decided it would be easier to reindex all the photos. So, I told it to ignore the old drive and use the new drive.

I left the faces in the list. It kept the names and deleted all the associated photos. (I expected this) Then I had it scan the new location. After a few hours, the new photos were all present, but the face recognition did not recognize any faces.
What do recommend?

  1. Uninstall and reinstall the program and start from scratch.
  2. Is there a way to force another re-identification of faces?
  3. Any other ideas?

Scarpo Please check if face recognition is turned on for new archive in Library locations dialog.

Thanks for the quick response. There are 2 folders selected.
The first folder has 1) Recognize faces, 2. Scan video files, 3. Scan Raw files turned on
The second folder (which is larger) has all 5 items turned on.

I just tried turning the recognize face off, closing the file, let it run a bit, then turned it back off and back on. To see if that would trigger it to start again. Did not seem to help.

    Additional info
When I moved the folders from the USB drive to the hard drive, I moved them with the copy / paste command at the top level folder. (I did not use the move command within Tonfoto.) The usb folders/files are still available, I removed the directory within Tonfoto and all the photos disappeared, but the faces tab still show the person with zero photos for each person.
I also noticed that each of the folders all contain a file called .tonfotos.ini Since these were probably from the original scan should i delete them?
It also seems that Tonfoto almost maxes out my CPU.
I’m running Microsoft Windows 10 Pro Version 10.0.19045 Build 19045
    Processor Intel® Core™ i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz, 2904 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
    32GB memory, NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 2GB VRAM,
I also did install the Tonfotos CUDA Runtime Libraries v. 12.1
These are the same parameters from the initial scan.

    Hope that will help.

If I uninstall should I remove all the .tonfotos.ini file from each folder to make it more like the first run?

Those files contain results of your work with faces. If really want to start over from the scratch, you should delete them before indexing archive. Otherwise they will help you to restore are face associations with people. However, if you deleted all faces from the photo previously, this will be recorded in ini file, and next time it will be scanned, face recognition will not even fire up for that file.

Can it be the explanation for what you are seing?

Added the original location back to the library in hopes that it would repopulate.

I didn’t delete all faces only a few test cases and they didn’t return. I assume if there is an ini file then it won’t run the face search. I’ll add a new folder to the library and add some people photos to see if the ini file is the issue.

If it is I’ll delete all the ini files.

If the photo has already been scanned, and the ini file is not there will it scan for faces or will I have to remove the photos from Tonfoto for it to locate the photos and scan the faces?

      I appreciate your help.

ini file is just a backup of the information that is already in database, so deleting while keeping photos in the library won’t help - file will get just created again at next scan.

To force reindex there are several ways. Most obvious one is to select files and use ‘re-index’ command from context menu. But you can also exclude folder from indexing (context menu of the folder) and then add it back (by Library locations dialog).

        Understood.

        It’s Working !
Here’s what I did. Uninstall tonfotos, and the cuda add-on.
        Redownloaded and reinstalled Tonfotos.
Deleted all the .tonfotos.ini files and one other file (a php file)
Restarted the program and it’s working better that the first time. (Albeit slower).
I did not reinstall the CUDA add-on, but will today to see if that speeds things up.

Is it normal to consume this much CPU and Memory when scanning? Perhaps this is why it’s running slower.

Is there a way to toggle the available CPU back? I realize it would slow things down, but could then easily run in the background?

Added CUDA back in. Running a bit faster, CPU is still maxing out.

Scarpo Well, face recognition is pretty heavy process, what else I can say. Since you have only 2 cores in your CPU, there is not much that can be done, I am afraid. On 5 or 6 cores you still can do other stuff while indexing is in the progress, but with only two there is no more processing power left. I would suggest to just wait.

Thank you, I appreciate your help. Everything is running smoothly.

This program is awesome. It really helps me organize my photos from a multitude of sources and eliminate the tons of duplicates caused by multiple cloud backup sites.

          Thanks again!
