  • Additional metadata is not available since the location is disabled

I’m getting duplicates in my library. One photo is normal. it has the correct metadata, and I’m able to open the photo and view it in windows explorer.

The other one, when I click on it, gives me the message “Additional metadata is not available since the location is disabled”. If I right click on the photo, nothing happens. The location says “undefined”. Both photos have the same filename.

Is there any way to keep the “bad” photos from showing up in my library?

KrisD This happens when one of the folders of your archive is located on the disk (USB, network, etc.) that is currently disconnected. If you try to view the photo, there will be a message about that.

However, some users reported that they are experience similar behaviour even if the disk is not disconnected. That typically happens if there were some changes made to the disk, most typical is changing volume label. Tonfotos has built-in function that automatically detects external drives if they are plugged in and mounted to different drive letter. But the same system may fail if the characteristics of drive change, and it may not seem to be the same drive anymore to the program.

Is your drive connected? If yes, did you do something with it, like changing volume label?

Andrey my external drive is connected, and no changes were made to it. The only thing I can think of is I moved some photos from one directory to another using windows explorer. Would that cause this?

KrisD If you moved the root directory of your archive, that would cause this effect, yes. However, if you only moved something inside it, then no.

For me to check what is happening with your drives and why Tonfotos does not see one, I would need some additional information, if you don’t mind. First, you configuration file %AppData%\tonfotos\config.json and then full output of this comand in console: cmd /c chcp 65001>nul && powershell.exe gwmi Win32_LogicalDiskToPartition.

Can you please send this to support@tonfotos.com?

KrisD Interesting. What email provides you are using? Can you send it from any of the pubic provides, like gmail?

Andrey Ah, that’s protonmail, right? I’m afraid, Yandex will not accept email from there, sorry for that. I discussed that with their support in the past already. They just can’t, it is just banned in their juridiction. I guess every email hosting provider has it’s blind spots and list of banned counterpars due to sanctions and all that. For example, the mailing service that is used in this forum actually is capable of sending mails to you apparently, but gets regulartly rejected from some other services, such as gmx.de for example. It does not seem there is any perfect solution that fits all requrements, unfortunetely. We tried several sevices already, but still have not found any that would just work whithout any exceptions.

Anyway, I am sorry for that inconvenience. Please use any backup email address, for example gmail.

KrisD Meanwhile, new version is released, and it has a funtion to solve exactly this issue: https://community.tonfotos.com/d/457-1914-bugfixes

However, looking into files that you sent me, it does not look that you should have this problem by now. Your “My Book” drive looks connected, according to config. Are you still experience the issue from the first message?

I installed the new version but I’m still having the issue. I have noticed that this is only happening when I’m trying to verify people. If I check the actual folder (within tonfotos) where the photo is, there is only one showing. The undefined duplicate only shows up on the people tab.

KrisD Hm.. that is odd. Are you shure this is same file though? While in Peopl tab, can you please switch to viewing fill images (Show original images) and then to ‘Go to folder’? Where you will end up?

Positive, same image in the photo, same file name. If I right click on the one with metadata, and click go to folder, it takes me to the folder view in tonfotos. If I right click on the one without metadata, nothing happens at all. Doesn’t even give me a popup menu. If I left click to highlight it, and click on the photo menu at the top, none of the options (move to, edit, rotate, etc) do anything.

KrisD It seems that I misunderstood you initially. So there are two files actually, both have same name, but one is real, and another is like a ghost, correct? It has no location, no actual file, just a face on it? I guess if you just delete all faces on it, will not be coming back again. Probably it will remain as a ghost somewhere in database, but since it is not attached to any actual folder, it will be totally invisible and won’t do any trouble.

I will try that, thank you. If this doesn’t work, how can I reset or rebuild the db? Would I need to remove the library and re-add it to rescan everything? Uninstall and reinstall?

KrisD Rebuilding db is straightforward - deinstall the application and install it again. However, I don’t think this would be necessary. It is more like using guillotine to get rid of fly, definitely helps, but a is bit of overreaction.
