Hello,

I just bought a license thinking it would solve my problems but not at all, it just created a folder with all the duplicates.
Is there a way to remove all duplicate but the most voluminous one on an automated fashion?

Going tthrough thousands of pictures to be deleted manually is not what I want to do, and I am ok if the process make the decision.

Best,
Tim

Tim I guess there is some confusion in how exactly duplicates feature is implemented in Tonfotos. Its main goal is maximal automation, as opposed to clicking thru every copy manually. However, it requires some understanding to use it efficiently. I think it would be easier to start from this video:

I will be happy to answer any question that will remain after watching this video.

Yes I saw the video, the thing is my duplicate generated folder contains 10k pictures and deleting all pictures in this folder will remove the “original” one. The question was is there a way to keep only 1 instance of each duplicate within this folder (the video seems to tell us it has to be manual).

I organized all my photo as "suggested by the app with yyyy-mm-dd and some are in different folders (the date has discrepencies depending on the picture). I just want the app to choose wich one to delete instead of knowing it’s at 2 different places.

Not sure I fully understand your video then…

Tim I agree the whole function is a bit complicated. There are cases when program knows which duplicate to delete, and there are cases where it does not. For example, if you have main archive, and there are file copies in other archives, you can delete all those duplicates with just one button click. However, if you have all your duplicates inside your main archive, program has no idea which ones to keep and which ones to delete. For example, there could be some meaningful folder structure, and if program will just randomly pick which copy to keep, that may break your structure.

However, if you don’t really care about your original folder structure and OK to go with yyyy-mm-dd, there is better solution for you. You can just import all your files into this yyy-mm-dd structure using this function, it will not only move files, it will also take care of duplicates in the process. I think this will be the easiest way for yo to clean up your archive.

      Hey Andrey,

Yes after watching all the tutorials and buying a license this was my intent, however some pictures metadata is changed (inconsistent dates or file format being changed by multiple sending/receiving/forwards).

Overall I would be happy for a function to make the decision based on paramters (most voluminous, or most ancient) even if there is data integrity risks (loosing permanently data).

To be honest I am thinking of giving up using your software just for this reason (I like most of it, don’t be offended) as I thought i was an opportunity to clear all my numerous “to be sorted” folders into 1 consolidated place.

Is this a feature you consider implementing? (i.e. for each picture in Album duplicate) - I would be happy to give you a user based algorithm easily scalable with parameters.

Tim Sorry that software is disappointing you. At this point we are not planning to make duplicate management more complicated, it is already quite complicated for many users.

However, even if you did change your files metadata, I still think that import function can solve most of the duplicate issues. I would suggest you give it a try.

gosimon Well, there are plenty of applications dedicated to duplicate removal, and they will always be more powerful than anything that Tonfotos has to offer. Tonfotos focus is on simplicity and automation, and only works for photo archives. Anything beyond that requires dedicated software, and we even have a great review of different tools in our blog, as of now it includes 17 applications: https://tonfotos.com/articles/best-apps-to-find-and-remove-duplicate-photos/

Yea in Sorry Andrey i didn’t find that feature in the app will have a play with now sorry about that.

Very cleaver you have the linking make a custom album that you can sort through as well.
