@Andrey Thanks for looking into this. I’am aware that this is an Electron issue. It seems very distribution specific, affecting Ubuntu 22.04 in particular. Maybe it is also related to Ubuntu 22.04 using Wayland. Issue https://github.com/electron/electron/issues/32760 suggests that it has something to do with hardware/gpu acceleration, at least setting app.disableHardwareAcceleration() seems to solve the issue.

As you can see from my log above, I had to apply the G_SLICE=always-malloc-Fix suggested in the forum to get Tonfotos to work. Not sure if this has anything to do with it.

Anyways, I do understand if this is not a high prio issue (since it is so specific) and that is probably hard or even impossible to fix on the app-side (since it is an Electron issue). I’ve been searching for years for an app exactly like Tonfotos. So I might as well wait a bit longer until the issue is resolved (or I upgrade my distribution). Thank you for the wonderful app and the active support here in the forums!

Have you tried the latest version? As you can see above, some users reported that performance improvements we made there had positive effect on “UI freeze on Linux” issue.

G_SLICE seems to be unrelated issue.

I am now having the same issue on MX Linux 23.2 KDE. The user interface seems frozen and will not respond, even after leaving it alone for a few hours. I can minimize the window via the Task Manager icon, but not the user interface. I can also close the application by right clicking on the task manger icon and selecting close. If I relaunch Tonfotos it will restart and sometimes be responsive for a while, then freezes again. When frozen I checked with the System Monitor and Htop, both show entries for Tonfotos and show changing activity in the CPU, memory and disk readouts. So, like you said the application appears to be working while the GUI is frozen. I will advise you if normal functionality returns.

An update about my Linux experiments. I downloaded and installed Ubuntu 24.04 and have installed Tonfotos, free version so far. I had to do the always malloc trick, it worked. I added a test folder with about 3700 files and it ran without problems. I scanned for faces but not video and raw files. Face detection seems fine. I then added a new library which is on a separate drive, NTFS, with over 120,000 files. I am still not scanning video and raw files yet. Tonfotos found a dossier of faces in the folder from the Windows version of Tonfotos, multi-boot machine, and seemed to handle that without problem. I left it scanning and after about an hour it stopped and shut down. No error messages. When I restarted Tonfotos there was a dialog asking to send an error report to the developer, so I did. The shutdown repeated again some time later. I then restarted Tonfotos with the terminal and captured a screenshot that seems to show some type of error, I will include it. Tonfotos is still running in the terminal but now the UI is frozen. :-(
There are two other small issues. One, I cannot enable the debug logging, possibly Windows only? Two, the About dialog show Tonfotos as Linux, Arch, x64. I expected it to be Debian or Ubuntu not Arch.

Arch: might mean Architect, as in 32bit or 64bit. Doh!

Yes, you are right, Arch is for type of CPU, not an OS type.

As I can see from the screenshot - those errors come from deep down Electron framework code. Tonfotos logging function won’t even capture such error, it only can capture errors in my own code. This pretty much confirms what I already knew about this issue - in some cases it starts to fail on some Linux OS, and it fails in electron framework itself.

I have feeling this may depend on the electron version, since this bug was not always there, it did not seem to appear in older builds of Tonfotos which used older electron version. I will need to experiment with that a little, but the challenge is this bug is not very consistent.

Hi, I just wanted to add my experience as a new user of Tonfotos on a Linux distro. I also experience UI freezing but can see processes in the background (from terminal, system monitor and nvtop). I can however, interact with the UI for 60 secs prior to it freezing. To interact again, ie change a quick setting, I need to end and restart an instance.

I assume when Electron is mentioned, it is the toolkit used to build the software and not something, as a user that I’d need to update?

sub25xt Yes, Electron is the framework application is built on and this is not something user can update, this is integral part of Tonfotos.

I just moved to Ubuntu 24.04 hoping that it would resolve the issue. However, after copying over my tonfotos config it freezes just like before.
@Andrey since you mentioned it may have something todo with the database. Is it worth trying to reset my config somehow without loosing faces and my license (since I have the payed version)? How would I best do this?

nkrauth If this is about UI freezes discussed above, configuration has nothing to do with it. That should be the issue of electron compatibility with this Ubuntu version.

Thanks. I suspected as much. What distros are actually tested/recommended to use tonfotos, if any?

nkrauth Since only tiny small portion of the users are on Linux, we have reduced our testing effors to include only our buld server which is Ubuntu 18. It has to be that old, othewise it will just won’t run on so many distro’s that do not have most recent glib.

Since this is a known electron issue that still has not been fixed (https://github.com/electron/electron/issues/32760), I am trying to apply the workaround suggested, namely disabling hardware acceleration. I am aware that this will severely impact application performance, but I still want to try.
Is there any way I can pass node environment variables to the packaged application, e.g.

NODE_OPTIONS='--disable-gpu --disable-gpu-rendering'

If not, I will just leave it for now. Thanks anyway for quick and elaborate response so far.

This is a special build that would apply these settings in case there is environment variable ‘TONFOTOS_DISABLE_GPU’. This way you can compare with and without it. Please let me know if that fixed freeze problem.
