nkrauth If this is about UI freezes discussed above, configuration has nothing to do with it. That should be the issue of electron compatibility with this Ubuntu version.

Thanks. I suspected as much. What distros are actually tested/recommended to use tonfotos, if any?

nkrauth Since only tiny small portion of the users are on Linux, we have reduced our testing effors to include only our buld server which is Ubuntu 18. It has to be that old, othewise it will just won’t run on so many distro’s that do not have most recent glib.

Since this is a known electron issue that still has not been fixed (https://github.com/electron/electron/issues/32760), I am trying to apply the workaround suggested, namely disabling hardware acceleration. I am aware that this will severely impact application performance, but I still want to try.
Is there any way I can pass node environment variables to the packaged application, e.g.

NODE_OPTIONS='--disable-gpu --disable-gpu-rendering'

If not, I will just leave it for now. Thanks anyway for quick and elaborate response so far.

This is a special build that would apply these settings in case there is environment variable ‘TONFOTOS_DISABLE_GPU’. This way you can compare with and without it. Please let me know if that fixed freeze problem.

nkrauth Thank you for trying out. That is sad, I hopped this would finally be the resolition for that long standing issue. Looks like we are back to squre one with this…

Experiencing the same issue on Fedora and discovered this pattern:

Only happen when under the “Folder View”, if cliquing around too much the UI eventually hang.
After it hang one time, it will hang everytime the application is launched.

Here’s my workaround:

edit ~/.tonfotos/config.json
delete this section :
"ui": {.....stuf....}.

Then I can use Tonfotos normally until the issue happen again.

Mpe24 That does sound really strange. “ui” section of config only stores your last state of UI (basically exaclty where you were last time in the program). I think this is more just a conicindence.

Andrey I can definitely confirm. Deleting the UI-section did the trick for me too. That is probably also the reason why deleting the config-directory solved the problem before.
Also, the issue appeared while clicking on a folder in the folder view just like @Mpe24 reported. After that it just hangs on every start.

Hi Andrey, thank for your reply. I’m experiencing it very often (similar symptoms then Gordo - UI Frozen). Sometime 2 to 3 times per sessions. Once Frozen, it very rarely come back by itself. Closing the UI & erasing the UI sections always bring it back to normal until it freeze again. Next time, I’ll try to be more selective under the UI sections and see if there’s a specific parameters that unfreeze it.

I have also had success deleting the “ui” section, even though I don’t really know what I am doing. It’s now working, YES!

Well, not so fast. The UI froze again after about an hour. A restart fixed it, but it refroze about 20 minutes later. I tried again a few hours later and it was still frozen. Since it is a .deb file I opened Discoverer and looked at the list of dependencies. It listed trash-cli as not installed, so I installed it. Tonfotos started normally and has been running for about an hour since. I did closed and then relaunched Tonfotos, again it is working. I do not know if this is related or not but thought it might be of some help.
MX Linux 23.4 64bit KDE Plasma, full updated.

Tonfotos froze up again and is still frozen when I restart the software. Bummer :-(

Lets try again maybe? if you don’ mind. I would like to use ubuntu version of tonfotos.
As I see,

Freezing in ubuntu - in my case - occurs ONLY when I press folders icons and names in “Folders” view, maybe, yet not indexed folders (?). After thiat ui disfunction starts and persists.
It’s enough to change 1 line in config.json: “mode”: “mode-folders” to “mode”: “mode-albums” and program starts again normally after crash, now in “albums” view. Looks like some troubles in visualising file storage? Localized symbols in filenames/pathes?
Please take a look at the log with the error happening - I could not understand it. Log starts with working UI in ubuntu and ends after crash, so maybe it could help us all .

This one looks very suspicious. There was attempt to exchange messages between main process and UI, but it failed. This is core functionality of Electron, everything in the app depends on it, it should not fail, but it fails. This is someting deep inside electron framework, there is very little we can do about it. I guess we can try to use different versions of electron and see which one works OK on this distro, but there is no guarantee it will help, I am afraid. But we worst part is I can’t promise we will be able to dedicate time to that task soon enough.

Andrey Thanks a lot and all the best! Hope you find the way to overcome the trouble! My saying “goodbye” to windows ® is then delayed, but this problem is not very big. Patiently waiting for the best multiplatform AI media manager “tonfotos” in ubuntu!

Well I just wanted to jump into here. I moved from windows to (yet another distro) mint due to windows 10 beeing obsoleted and too old pc for win11. I bought the app half a year ago because I liked it that much 😀

Fixed the “G_SLICE” problem and now it seems i’m running into the same issue which is described here. Thanks Andrey for this amazing application and also thanks for giving some time to a minor user base.

I’m also getting the disposed before WebFrameMain error, but I can also add another error which I have not seen here yet (which is why I registered)

This one is definetly an error in Tonfotos code, however this error has nothing to do with app freezing or crashing. As you can see, it was handled, logged and app moved on after it. The WebFrameMain is the one that does not let program to function properly.
