Not exactly a bug or a feature request, but more of a question…

A few times I come cross photos where the rectangle box around a person’s face extends beyond the face and overlaps onto the next person’s face. The other person is not yet tagged but when I tried to click on the centre of the other person’s face, the first person’s box keep coming up, so I’m unable to tag the other person.
So, I click on the side of the other persons face and a few seconds later a new box is shown but it’s not on the face of the other person (ie. eyes, nose, mouth are not in the box), so it’s pointless selecting a name of the other person.

Is there a way to adjust the size of the box?

leonardoa since this is not a bug report, I am moving this to questions category.

Currently you can’t change dimensions of box that surrounds the face. It is calculated automatically based on autodetected face geometry. Faces can intersect, but that should not be a problem as long as both faces were detected correctly. If you have only one face detected, you can detect another one using “Add new face here” function. And it is totally OK if you do that inside other person’s box, that should work anyway. If in the end both faces were detected successfully, there should not be a problem to tag each one. Just point to the center of the box to make sure you select correct face with the mouse.

However there might be cases, when program just can’t correctly find face even if you point it where it is. That happens from time to time for low quality photos, faces that are visible only partially or are looking away from the camera. If that is the case, this face cannot be tagged in the current version.

In the future there will be function that will allow to mark people on the photos even face cannot be detected, or even absent on the photo, but I can’t tell right now anything about dates for this funciton.

      Ah, ok. Thanks.

I didn’t see the option ‘Add new face at this location’ in the pop-up menu when you click inside the existing face geometry box, as the option has move to the bottom of that menu and not where I used to see it.

      Cheers

Andrey : I am writing to support the request to be able to add a new face by drawing a bounding box.

Tonfotos does an astonishingly excellent job of recognizing faces even when the face is turned, partly obscured, blurry, poorly exposed and/or very small, Thank you for bringing my attention to the “Add new face here” that is at the bottom of the context menu when right clicking inside an existing bounding box. Because the “Add new face here” item is at the top of the menu when clicking outside of a bounding box for a face, I hadn’t noticed that it was at the bottom. I had been working around this problem by deleting the face and attempting to re-add the two faces, which sometimes worked.

Very very occasionally, tonfotos refuses to find a face that I think should be findable. It appears that tonfotos might have more difficulty with faces in black and white pictures. I have a recent, high quality, digital wedding photo shot by a professional photographer, in both a colour and a B&W version. Tonfotos found the bride’s face automatically in the colour picture but steadfastly reports that it “Could not find a new person’s face…” when I try to add it to the B&W version. I also have some B&W baby photos from the 50s scanned from medium format film where tonfotos is also unable to find the face even though it is fairly clear, reasonably exposed and focused, the face is not obscured, and the face shows both eyes, nose, and mouth. Overall though tonfotos does an excellent job of finding the faces in my fairly large collection of B&W pictures including the poor quality images.

For these occasional pictures where tonfotos cannot locate a face, I would much like to be able to click-drag a box around the face and add it to the tonfotos database. I am glad that this is on your list of features to add. Thank you.

Prospector Yep, not exactly that, but something similar is only mid-term list. Please stay tuned.
