  • Face recognition not available anymore

Recently discovered Tonfotos and already fan of it !
A’m currently using the Free version 1.11.17 (cuda) on Win10 ×64 but will upgrade soon.
I sucessfully tagged up to twelve persons with a firt set of images stored on pCloud, as P: drive and all worked fine.
But now, I wanted to add new pCloud libraries and the Face Recognition does work anymore.
“Poeple” tab still shows my twelve faces, but with zero images.
Also, no way to get any person suggestions or to manually tag a face.
NB: I can see the .tonfotos.ini files in the folders and the AppData\Roaming\tonfotos folder is around 600MB.
Any idea on how to solve the issue?

Also, I’m planning to manage 50000 images for about 1TB. Is it not too ambitious ?

Thank you !!!

Didier Thank you for kind words!

Didier “Poeple” tab still shows my twelve faces, but with zero images.

Than means, that files are gone from the library. People remained, obviously, but since there are no faces, than means program does not see images they are from and decided that those were removed. That means, there is something wrong with the paths. Most likely, files are not anymore at the same path they used to be. I don’t have personal expereince with pCloud, I guess you have better understanding why this might happen.

Didier Also, I’m planning to manage 50000 images for about 1TB. Is it not too ambitious ?

Not at all, I would say this is about average archive size Tonfotos usually works with.

Thank you Andrey for your quick response.
pCloud works very much like Dropbox, with an appication running on Windows for accessing the files from the cloud.
This means that the files always have the same path as it was a local path.
The images can till be shown from the “Folder” tab and from the “Locations” tab, as well as all metadata (unless faces)

I also tried to deselect / reselect the “Recognize faces” buton from the Library management window.

Didier Thank you, it looks that my initial guess was wrong. If files are still there and you can still open every file to view fullscreen, then there should be something else.

Do I get right, that when you select a photo, you don’t see any face on it (in the file info panel)? Not just people, but unassigned faces are also missing? If you do “re-index photo”, will faces appear again?

indeed, by selecting a photo, I don’t see any metadata about face in the info pannel, nor any way to confirm a person, since nothing is suggested.
I tried to Re-index some files from the context menu, but nothing changes.
I also tried to deselect and reselect the Recognize faces from the Library without success.

Didier Ok, interesting. What happens if you open the photo and then try to add face manually?

when “Add new face at this location” from context menu, it says "Could not find a new person’s face in
        the specified location."
But “Add to personal album to…” works, so then I can see this picture linked to the avatar in the info pannel.

Didier But “Add to personal album to…” works, so then I can see this picture linked to the avatar in the info pannel.

Yes, that part should always work, it does not depent on recognition.

Didier when “Add new face at this location” from context menu, it says "Could not find a new person’s face in
          the specified location."

Is this clear picture with unobscured high quality face? That means that recognition does not work for some reason. Do you have CUDA Runtime installed? Let us start from removing it (when Tonfotos is closed). This will disable GPU processing and only CPU will be used. If that will not also resolve situation and faces will not be recognized even you do it manually, the next step should be logs: https://community.tonfotos.com/d/26-making-debug-logs-in-tonfotos

yes, by having uninstalled CUDA, the face recognition comes back…
So, would it be a bug in CUDA plugin? or should I try reinstalling it again ?

Didier There are so many moving parts when it comes to recognition on GPU, there is GPU itself, NVidia drivers, CUDA library, etc. Who knows at which stage it went wrong, this is really hard to say.

I would suggest you continue without CUDA if it proven to be unstable on your system. It is only needed when you index your library, it helps to speedup the process. Afterwards you will not even notice the difference in performance.

            Alright, understood.
Thank you for your support !
            Didier

Didier Sure, thank you for the patience with all my questions.

By the way, if you like the program please consider rating it on Trustpilot

While the Face recognition went back by uninstalling CUDA, poeple who where previoulsy indexed do not appear anymore, but only works with new pictures.
Re-indexing these previous pictures desn’t help.
If I want to restart the recognition from scratch, would it be enough deleting all .tonfotos.ini files everywhere ?

Didier If that is the way you chose, then

                1. remove the folder from “Library locations”,
                2. Remove all ini files
                3. Add folder again
                4. Wait for indexing to finish
