Donny Can you please confirm that once the info is entered for a person (name, description, relationship, etc) that it is immediately embeded in that files metadata?
I am afraid not. First of all, there is no metadata standard that supports storing any of those data into image metadata, at least not that I am aware of. There are some information that can be stored in XMP or EXIF of the image, but this is information about the image, not about the person. The most we can store about the person, it is face region and name, associated with it.
More, when you edit a person info, do you expect that say all of 10 000 pictures with that person will also get immediately updated to store this family information? I am afraid, that would be very problematic.
This information is currently stored inside Tonfotos internal database, and also duplicted into proprietary dossier file, more about it here: https://community.tonfotos.com/d/186-version-150-people-data-synchronization
Also, as far as I know, there is no other photo management software that can actually deal with family ties information. Even though that sounds to be pretty obvious feature, only Tonfotos has it.
Donny Also, I have read that new metadata cannot be added to Raw files. Is that true?
Currently metadata editing is supported for JPEG, HEIC and PNG only, and TIFF is on the way in the next version.
Donny Bottom line, I just need to identify huge collections of faces in a way that allows me to easily find the people in my (or any) editor. I would be eternally grateful if anyone can tell me how using Tonfotos.
This part is simpler. Tonfotos does write face regions information into metadata (of supported image types) and other programs that support reading it, will be able to read it. DigiKam does, Faststone does, ACDSee does. As to other - I would not be too optimistic. I don’t think Irfanview actually has this feature, but I could be mistaken. Anyway, this is not question to us, this is question to them.
Hoever, you will need to turn this storing face data into XMP feature on in Library locations dialog, as it is off by default.
