XMP face regions without people names

I’ve noticed that while the face names are confirmed and visible in Tonfotos, it seems that only the face locations are stored in the files themselves, not the names.

For example, when I check the face data using XnView, I can see the face locations but not the corresponding names. Interestingly, this is only the case for photos I’ve recently tagged. For photos that were previously tagged by Tonfotos, the face names are correctly stored in the file metadata.

Could you clarify why this difference occurs and if there’s a way to ensure the names are consistently saved in the file metadata for all photos?

MieHoen This sounds like a bug, not an intended behaviour. Can you please send me few file samples with those face regions written by Tonfotos that do not contain people names? The address is support@tonfotos.com

MieHoen Thank you for sharing files. Upon closer examination, those files were not updated with Tonfotos at all. Some do not contain face regions, one does contain one, but that one was written by iOS, not by Tonfotos. iOS never writes people names, only person ID sometimes.

Please check your settings and make sure to give Tonfotos enough time to update all files.

Thanks for checking the files. The issue is that some faces are confirmed in Tonfotos, but they are not visible in XnView. This only happens with a few photos.

I have already restarted my PC, but the issue remains exactly the same. How long does the saving/updating process usually take? Is there a way to track the progress?

To make it clearer, I’ve recorded a screen video showing the issue. I’ll send it to you by email.

I see. Looks like some sort of glitch. Tonfotos thinks it already wrote all changes to those files and does not try to write them again. It would be interesting to know how that happened.

Anyway, in this case you neeed to reset the flag “already saved” by doing some new actions with the faces on those images. You can assign one some arbitrary person to arbitrary face and then clear it back. This will force Tonfotos to write metadata for affected files once again.

thanks Andrey, that might be an option for 1 or few images, but I gave 10k or more. Is there some way to force rewrite all?

MieHoen First can you confirm that this method I described works for several of your files?

Also, it does sound really strange that you have thousands of files on which XMP update failed. I was under impression that is was only failing for some, willing to assume there was some glitch that affected few files, but all of them? Then problem should be somewhere else I guess. Let me make one step back and ask you what I should be asking in the very beginning. Are you sure you turned this feature on in thie library locations dialog for that location? Can you please doublecheck?

That setting was indeed turned off—I’m not sure how that happened. About half of the photos were correctly rewritten with faces.

Tonfotos has now been running for 4 hours to rewrite the face data. I’ll let you know if I notice anything unusual.

E.s.e. The problem above was that XMP regions option was just not turned on, so it doesn not seem to be exactly the same one. In any case, did you already confirm that regions are actually in the files already? You can use XnView for that, as discussed above.

If regions are there, but Google does not see faces, then I believe the issue is on Google side. Is it actually supposed to work? Maybe it is good idea to ask Google support. Please share thier reply here if you will.

IS TRUE, THE PROBLEM IS WITH GOOGLE FOTO, BUT, i think that this is strange, because with Picasa, this problem It didn’t happen.

E.s.e. I believe Picasa had direct integration with Google by API, since it was bought by Google specifically to lure people into using thier Cloud. Tonfotos has no direct integration with Goolge, not yet annyway. However, if you are paid user of thier cloud I think it makes sense to ask thier support directly on why there is no support for XMP face regions. Maybe there is some option that turns that on.
