Severe slowdown and hangs when tagging people

started recently, when i’m tagging faces, the UI hangs very very often, sometimes every 3 consecutive clicks of V or X on pictures.
sometimes these hangs coincide with “scanning xxxx” prompts in the bottom corner, but these seem to start after i start tagging pictures.

running on a 8-core ryzen+RTX3080

Hi Andrey!

i go to people tab
i choose an existing person
i hove over the tumbnail and click the V to confirm (or X to remove/right-click to correctly assign)
after doing this for 2-3 tumbnail , the UI hangs, the buttons on the next tumbnail don’t appear for a few seconds, i see a spike in CPU usage on one of the cores, the tonfotos window also sometime freezes and refreshes
after playing with this, it looks related to the amount of pictures the person is tagged in, this almost never happens in a ₃₀₀ picture person, and happens almost always in a ₆₀₀₀ picture person.
i’m not sure but this also looks related to UI refresh when tagged thumbnails are removed from the UI and the rest of the thumbnails “shuffle up” to close the gap

Oriel Thank you very much for details. One question also, do you have dossier option enabled in your Library locations dialog? Is it enabled in one of the locations or in several? If you turn it off, does this affect performance?

Dossier is not enabled, when i came here to post the issue i also saw the “store person in file metadata” option was added, and i enabled that yesterday (thanks! it’s a great feature!), issue is persistent regardless of that option being enabled

Oriel Thank you for clearing this up. There are so many thing going on under the hood so it is real chalenge to fugure out which one is responsible for delay. Thanks to you, now we can rule out two of them.

Speaking of spike of CPU usage. When it happens, how long this spike lasts? Fraction of a second? Several seconds?

@Andrey ok, i think i figured it out, when i disable onedrive sync, the issue’s severity goes down, altho i still see CPU spikes, i’m going to play with this a little more and update. thanks!

Oriel Thank you very much! Please share any results you will be able to discover.

Looking on your CPU graph it is really hard to recognize the pattern of the function causing this. If that would be something related to internal database, it would be fractions of the second, but that could really block the UI. Calculation of face suggetions looks closer, but it is completely separate thread and should not have any effect on UI. It would just occupy one of the cores, while others will be totally free. Also, suggestions calculation would not fire up immediately after you making changes to the person faces, there is several seconds cool-down period (something like 10s).

Please keep sharing how it feels now, after onedrive is out of the way.
