Always show faces the right way up

I’ve been getting the faces in my photos recognised, but have had an issue with lots of portrait photos not being displayed vertically. So, a load of faces were displayed sideways. Worse, if I rotated these photos at a later time, the pictures would need re-indexing.

If you could figure out that the faces were not upright, could you rotate them until they were, then display that rotated face image? That would solve a lot of visual and reindexing issues, if it was possible.

greyilocks The task of detecting correct orientation of the photos is quite complicated. There is no solution I am aware of that would give accuracy anything close to 99%, but even 1% of errors is totally unacceptable for this feature. My experience shows that actual number of wrongly rotated photos is significantly less that 0.1% for regular people these days, since smartphones are very good at tracking proper orientation. Only some older digital cameras tend to have issues with it, but that would be the issue for only small portion of the users.

With that said, if only 0.1% of images actually need to be corrected, and error rate of autimatic detection of orientation significanlty more than 1%, adding that feature would only piss of most of the people and do more harm than good.

I have no real idea how face recognition works, but I thought it looked at lips, mouth, eyes, nose, etc., so it didn’t seem unreasonable to think the software could be looking at the orientation of the face. If it’s just looking at a sideways face the same as an upright face then that would seem a little odd, and unlike what I’d read.

The issue for me is that my Canon CR3 files are all over the shop, as different browsing utilities seem to be doing different things. I think I’m going to be able to sort orientation out, but it’s tricky. I’m surprised that the CR3 files don’t have the correct orientation, perhaps I’d not set the camera up correctly.

This seemed a solution that might fix a few issues, but I think you’re probably right.
