In designing this application I am trying to follow minimalistic philosophy, keeping the number of available options to the very minimum, to keep UI simple and clean. Instead I thy to make application smart enough so it fits all use cases well without need for additional settings. Sure, this not always works and some meaningful settings still have right to exist. But finding this balance - it complicated process. So I typically start from something that works best for most of users to my understanding, and then listen to feedback. So far I did not get complains that default selection for download folder is does not suite user needs.
For example, my own process looks following. I do not store photos at the location where they get downloaded from telegram. This is not my main archive. I typically review them after download, some delete, and others I put into my main archive into folders with meaningful names, something like 2022/May 15/Beerhouse For that process I do not need to customise download location, and one in Pictures fits me fine. It would be great to hear about your process, after we fix other issues, ofcourse.
As to large groups. It is designed the way it blocks downloads from really large groups, like channels with thousands subscribers. So far I had no complain that some one was not able to download images from their own group. I would prefer to address this issue based on actual cases - like there is a group that you are interested in, and Tonfotos ignores it. Then we will find a way around that, and most likely this will not be a check box.
It is sad to hear that you were not yet able to download anything. That can mean that you have encountered some sort of bug.
