I have installed the free version to try it out. I rebooted after installation. When I click the desktop icon, it comes up with the license agreement. I check all the boxes and choose “Use Free Version” (clickable). Nothing happens – it never starts. Task manager shows no active process. Bitdefender shows no errors.

For a long time I have looking for a Picasa replacement. I am hoping this will be it, but want to try it out for a while. If it meets my needs I will buy it. But first I have to get it to run. I run a lot of software and do not have trouble with them. I am a very experienced Windows/PC user.

I am on Windows 10 with the latest updates.

Here is the log report per your instructions.

Sometimes this kind of symptom can happen if the app does not know where it is located. Therefore I have tried executing the app from within it’s folder. No help. Have also tried run as administrator and run compatibility windows 8.

rgp1942 Ah, I see what the issue is. For some reason. there is no C:\Windows\system32 in your PATH system environment variable. This is not normal, as there is a lot of critical stuff located in that folder. That is why when Tonfotos tries to call CMD.EXE, Windows is not able to find it. Actually you are not the first user with this issue, but this a mistery to me why computer actually can function normally with this path missing in your PATH variable.

In any case, since several users faced this issue already, in version 1.7.5 we made workaround so Tonfotos will work correctly even if PATH variable is not set up correctly. So, if you will just download latest version, it will work fine.

However, I would strongly suggest you to add C:\Windows\system32 to your PATH variable.

I added the path to the environment as requested (see image), rebooted, and ran 1.7.4. The problem still occurred. I installed 1.7.5 and the problem still occurred. I uninstalled TonFoto, installed 1.7.5 and the problem still occurred. I get the License screen and then it disappears. I’m going to give up on TonFoto and use FastStone. I’m doing a project and don’t have time to help you debug your software at this time.

rgp1942 Sure, hope you will achieve your goals with other software.

However I don’t think Tonfotos is the only application that will get affected with the fact that someone or something messed up with your PATH variable. You only have 7 paths there including one you just added, this is not normal. Fresh installation of Windows has more. For example, it definitely misses path to PowerShell, and Tonfotos uses that one too. Even thought you decided not to use Tonfotos anymore, I would still suggest you to restore all missing default system paths. Otherwise you will continue facing unexpected issues with different software here and there.

I have lot’s of programs, utilities, simulators, etc. and all are running OK. But I will look into what it takes to restore the environment paths to Windows defaults.

FastStone didn’t meet my needs so I am sticking with Picasa. If you could include the functionality that’s in Picasa in Tonfotos you would really have something desirable. Many people are looking for a newer program that does what Picasa does, with the ease that Picasa does it. I would be happy to be a beta tester.

rgp1942 Tonfotos already has many of function that Picasa had, and we get lots of feedback like “I was looking for so long for something to substitute Picasa, Tonfotos seems to be closest to what I want”. It even will import data from picasa.ini files to restore your old face-people associations. So, I would like to ask you to be more specific about functions that you are missing, but please post each one as separate thread so other users will be able to take part in the discussion and support particular feature requests.

I am not sure about beta testing 🙂 Tonfotos graduated from that stage more than a year ago. Few months ago it has passed the milestone of 10 000 downloads per months. And I can assure you, the issue you are facing is pretty unique, so far only about 3 users reported something similar. So I am pretty confident this is not an application issue, rather than Windows (mis)configuration. Nevertheless, to avoid that, in 1.7.5 was added woraround for that problem, and CMD.exe will be called OK even if there is no path to it. However, in your case, you are also missing path to Powershell.exe, we will add that to workaround too in the next release. However, if you will restore missing C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\ to your PATH, Tonfotos will just work.

I added that other path and the program came up OK. Thanks!
