@“Andrey” #p1146

I’m genuinely surprised that I seem to be the only one requesting this feature. While I understand that it might not be deemed a high priority for implementation, I’d like to highlight that I have a significant number of older pictures predating the smartphone era. The majority of these images are incorrectly oriented, a common issue from the time when I used film. Interestingly, the CDs sent by the film company with the developed pictures were consistently misaligned.

Consequently, I find myself with a considerable collection of incorrectly oriented photos. Additionally, I’ve hesitated to manually rotate them, as I’ve observed, as others have mentioned, that this action removes facial tags. Therefore, before making any adjustments, I’d like to identify a practical solution that ensures optimal handling of the issue.

Regarding relationships, I’ve noticed that the need for specific tags extends beyond second-degree connections, particularly when trying to label someone as an “Ex-Wife” or “Ex-Girlfriend.” It has become apparent to me that having customizable and nameable options for such relationships would greatly enhance the usability of the application. Considering the size of my family and the existence of cultural titles that may not be universally recognized, I believe it’s crucial to assign names and tags to individuals in these pictures. This way, anyone, whether unfamiliar or not me, could easily interpret the relationships within a group photo.

Upon reflection, I came across a YouTube short that shares similarities with my idea

albeit lacking the feature of displaying a person’s profile upon clicking. Integrating such functionality, as you suggested, would be a valuable addition. It’s imperative that this enhancement seamlessly integrates with tonfoto, preserving the program’s simplicity that I find appealing. I aim to avoid the hassle of switching between multiple tools and duplicating information across platforms, especially considering that these photos are interconnected within a family tree.

I’m enthusiastic about contributing and assisting in any way possible. Additionally, I’m curious about the process of copying all the information and transferring it to another PC. Could you provide guidance on how to accomplish this?

I apologize for not addressing your question earlier. I would like to create a comprehensive family collection that can be easily shared with all our relatives. I’ve observed that beyond the fourth generation, valuable information tends to fade away with time. My aim is to counteract this trend and establish a connection for future generations like my children and nephews.

I envision a repository where they won’t face the struggles I currently do in tracing our roots. Rather than grappling with uncertainty, I hope they can access a program that allows them to look up individuals, understand their relationships, explore family degrees, and, thanks to Tonfoto, even view pictures to gain a richer understanding of their heritage.

A poignant quote from a series comes to mind: “How am I supposed to know where to go or who I am if I don’t have a history.” Your program goes beyond a personal endeavor; it becomes a meaningful contribution to numerous individuals. I aspire to see the next generation build upon this foundation, and I am optimistic about achieving that goal.

I express my gratitude once again, as your program has propelled me further than I could have reached on my own. I anticipate its continued advancement, hoping it will serve many more in the future.

Slavko Thank you very much, your input is very helpful and gives a lot of food for thought. One additional question if you don’t mind. You added the video to support your idea of functionality that can be added, as far as I understand. However, I am not sure I understand how this visual tool addresses the issue with limited number of connection types in Tonfotos. As far as I can see, this tool don’t even have any connection types and does not support all the possible complexities, such as displaying current and past wifes for example. Hierarchy there is pretty flat and strict and does not seem to be designed for complicated cases. So if you would be able to comment your idea what you wanted to demonstrate with this clip, that would really help.

I keep the family information in gramps (https://gramps-project.org/blog/) which is very powerful and allows to link a multimedia galery to a person. It can export data in GEDCOM ( A Genealogical Data Communication) format, which seems quite standard. If you want to extend tonfotos genealogical features, I suggest to use GEDCOM format for import/export. FWIW …

Janusz thank you for sharing your experience. Yes, GEDCOM support is in the backlog, thought I am still collecting information about particular applications to which connectivity should be maintained. Even though GEDCOM is formally a standard, there are still different flavours of its implementation in different apps.

        Hello @Janusz,

I appreciate your input! I will delve deeper into the topic to gain a better understanding. Additionally, Andrey, I’ll explore various types further before responding to your question. I’ve realized that to articulate my preferences effectively, I need a comprehensive understanding of the available options. I apologize for the delayed response, but I assure you I will get back to you with a thoughtful reply.

        Thank you!

I hope @Slavko wouldn’t mind me jumping in to the conversation. I use the People tab of the app quite a lot and I also thought of being able to identify cousins, nieces and nephews, uncles and aunts, grand parents, and so on, but as @Andrey has said it only makes sense to add relations of immediate family members.

All the other relations, such as cousins, nephews, grand kids, etc. are “relative” relation to some individual, so for that to work, you need to first specify who is the base person from which all other relations will be related to. I could say that since I’m the primary user of the app, I want all the relationships to base off me, but then my wife could come along and said, “Hey what about my cousins and uncles?”

Hey i wont mind at all ! Im thankfull for all the input.
This is the reason I plan to tailor the app to suit my needs. When i will give other People the Information i gathered they can tailor it to whatever they need it. However, I’ve been contemplating the idea of incorporating a feature centered around free text. Let’s refer to it as a ‘culture-specific element,’ where I can tag and specify that either multiple individuals share this designation or only a particular person holds this title.

Actually I too noticed sometimes the software doesn’t autocorrect the orientation based on metadata and leads to some weird face tag recognition. Having autorotate before face detection makes sense to me, hopefully this can be easily implemented!

rb_imager yep, that is quite obvious thing to implement, that is why it was implemented from the very beginning 🙂 If you actually stumbled upon some images that for some strange reason are not properly rotated even though correct orientation is actually present in its metadata, I would be very grateful if you would send some examples to me for analysis. Is is possible?

Andrey I could try sending an image or 2 after censoring the face and removing device-id+location metadata, does that work? If yes, where should I send it?

rb_imager Before going to all that trouble, I would like to ask you to first check if Tonfotos indeed wrongly interprets orientation of those images. Can you please open it in several different viewers, including Windows Photos? If all others show the same orientation as Tonfotos, then there is no point doing all that, since Tonfotos treats metadata correctly.

However, if there is indeed difference, then I don’t really care what you do with those images as long as the difference remains. However, chance is, there is something wrong with metadata, and after your changes this mistake will get automatically fixed by editor, and difference will disappear.

                Hope that makes sense.

Andrey You’re right, the native photo viewer was also showing it rotated, so fixed it there!
