Sort by date of Folder view

Currently the Folders are sorted in alphabetical order.
Having recently started to use Tonfotos because of being recommended as offering the nearest alternative to Picasa, the only real frustration I have is that I am unable to sort the folders in time order in the same way as Picasa.
Is this something that could be added?

Neilineastbury Sure. This one is not among high priority features, but people ask about this from time to time, so yes, eventually it will be implemented.

does Tonfotos offer any sorting function? It would be most helpful if images appear in the folder in Tonfotos in the same order as in the file explorer.

Hi, new user. Sorting in the Folders view is a MUST. I have a file in windows explorer that takes me 30 minutes to find in Tonfotos because the sort order is in some weird sorting way and I can’t seem to change the sort type. For example, looking for Box_01_0449_a in Tonfotos. I have to manually go through 1000 photos in a particular folder to try to find that photo. It’s aggravating. The sort is not by filename but by some other means. If it is the date the scan date or the last time the file was updated, it’s useless. I’ve scanned 1000 photos. Now I’m going through and naming each file in Windows Explorer manually with Date, Who, Where, What info in the filename. I sent a photo to an Uncle asking info about it. I got it now. I know the filename is Box_01_0449_a.jpg for example, but since all the files were scanned or edited in the last few days, it’s worthless. At least sort by the filename which I can then find easily so I can match the order in Windows Explorer.

Also, add a find option while in the Folders view that looks for a filename and not a name of a face in the People view.

Hope this helps you understand why Users would appreciate this basic feature.

RENAMING LOTS OF FILES (Before importing to Tonfotos)

If you are renaming a lot of files (I have been… taken over the family albums on my wife’s side), might I suggest an incredibly powerful tool (at least, I think so).

After I realized what was going on with the Tonfotos sort, I added in Windows Explorer a “Created Date” column and that helped to find the file much quicker. I still recommend the common sorts within the “Folders” view in Tonfotos like sort by filename, date (last edited date), and possibly a few others.

Even better, make the Search (Ctrl F) feature search for a filename when in that view. It can search for peoples name when you are in the “People” view.

MattS My personal opinion is that adding possibility to search by file names would be best solution in terms of additional UI complexity vs. added value balance, so we will definitely will consider that for future releases, but no promises so far, stay tuned 🙂

@MattS The Search function in Folder view allows you to search for folders, not filename and for me that’s exactly what I want. I don’t want to search for files in a folder view. For example, if I want to look for pictures taken in Miami, I just type Miami in the search bar of Folders view and I get a list of folders with the name Miami in them that I have taken over the years and from that I just choose the folder that I want to view pictures of.

The folders in Folders view are sorted by name alphabetically, as far as I’m aware, and since I have always named the folders by date, e.g. YYYY-MM-DD followed by the event or place name, the folder ordering in Tonfoto works perfectly fine for me. This is how the folder view looks in my Tonfotos.

I also read your other posts and I understand your unique way you are using Tonfotos and like as @Andrey said the way you are using the app is not how it was designed for, so I wouldn’t want the app to change how it works but that’s just my feeling. It’s up to the developer, of course, if the features you are requesting are worth implementing.

For me, as a user migrating from Picasa, this is an essential feature - to be able to change sort order to filename, created date/modified date, or date taken.

At a bare minimum it should be possible to change the current sort from descending to ascending.

This not being possible will definitely deter me from purchasing a paid licence.

EDIT: It seems the descending order was actually the order it was indexing. Going back to the folder later it is in ascending order, which is good!
