Unnecessary (re) scanning

Hi Andrey - first, this is amazing software. Thank you. Been looking for a Picasa type viewer replacement for years with minimal luck.

Bringing this to your attention for maybe a future code fix.

I installed 1.4.2 and have disabled both face and video scanning. I let the program fully index and have opened it a few times since and no rescanning occurs upon reopening - which is great - because no pictures changed.

One of the folders is my Dropbox camera uploads, so as a test, I took a new photo that automatically gets added to this folder.

Upon opening tonfotos, it rescans all folders. Somehow it knew a picture was added hence the rescan but couldn’t that same check limit the rescan to the folder with the new picture?

arialnovelty unfortunately there is no other way for program to know if something changed except for rescan, that is why it has to perform it regularly. However, during this rescan it only reads directories and file modification dates, and will not read files content until they are changed since last rescan.

Why you think this rescan is an issue?

My rescan takes 15-30 minutes, and I don’t want to corrupt anything by closing the program before its done.

But I’ve noticed something else. I’m running Windows 10.

I open the program and shows “ready” in the lower left corner. As soon as I use my mouse wheel to scroll through the pictures, the program starts to rescan all folders again.

In my case, it looks like it is going beyond directories and dates, as I see the individual file names in the lower left scanning progress area.

I guess those are the core questions - does it need to do a full rescan every time? And even after its done a full scan, why does scrolling kick off another rescan process?

arialnovelty please don’t be afraid to close applicaiton during rescan, it is designed the way it will not break anything.

When you navigate throught the folders, it indeed does quick scan of those folders you open right now. This is done to make sure that if you change something (like add new photo, delete or rename it in Explorer) you will not have to wait for changes to take effect in the application when only after full rescan will be finished (which may never be the case as you can close the app wihtout waiting it to finish, as we discussed earlier).

Those two things ara actually the core mechanics of the application, so I don’t think this needs to be changed or disabled. All those things are necessary, and without it user experience would be significantly worse.

Seems I am not making myself clear. I’ve gone and uninstalled it, restarted my machine, and reinstalled it from a new installer. I’ll report back with what I’m seeing after the reinstall.

When I say a simple mouse scroll kicks off a rescan, it kicks off a rescan of all my folders, not just a single folder.

Also, I’m not interacting with any photos, not clicking, etc. I’m just using the mouse wheel to scroll from say my Desktop to my Downloads view. But this then kicks off a full rescan into my Dropbox, OS, Vault, etc. folders.

I do think an option (same place where you have toggle switches for scanning faces or videos) to always scan would be helpful, as probably 90% of my picture folders never change and think it would be the same for other users who have folders tied to historical events, birthdays, holidays, vacations, etc.

I’ll give my new install a couple of days and report back. Thank you again!

I would like to make a comment though.

I understand that this is how it may look, but it is not the case. Scrolling initiates rescan only of the current folder, without any subfolders. The reason all other folders get scanned is because this is part of regular rescan that program does regularly.

In any case, I completely agree that it makes sense to wait for full indexing to finish, and then use app for couple more days before making conclusions if current behaviour is convenient or not. I’m looking for more feedback later.

Great news, the prior install must have been slightly buggy as a fresh install seems to have remedied the perpetual scanning issue.

Now, when I open the app from a cold boot, it takes about 20 minutes to run its full scan but then does not do the perpetual rescanning issue I originally noted.

This written, I would request that a feature to “scan once” or “scan always” be added to the folder settings area. This could significantly reduce the rescanning time every time the app is opened.

Love the software, please keep it going!
