In addition to faces I am tagging holidays, specific subjects or unique locations, anything that faces doesn’t cover so I can easily find specific photos from a 30 year old library with hundreds of thousands of images.
Sometimes the photos are film scans, in which case having detailed tags can replicate lost metadata. I find that tags are a crucial step in taming a massive library and they are incredibly powerful. My photo library has literally come alive with the use of tags.
Tags are useful when you want to instantly group one aspect of your library with a quick click of a button.
I also have collections of photos which have been specific interests of mine, almost a theme. I can tag that theme (maybe it’s vintage doorways, or iron grates, for example, and see a decade’s worth of that theme as one group, pulled instantly.
Organizing a photo library for its maximum potential is so much more than just faces.
