Sure, you can change avatar for a person by right click on desired face in the People view.
Artur can the family tree show bigger/more area faces
That feature is completely automated, not much options to play with are available. The template was designed by professional designers, so chances are that any change like that will not make it look better. Some people still prefer to tweak the resulting picture, for that you can just copy and paste it (control+C and control+V) into your favorite image editor.
Artur can I add dates under the faces
There should be separate thread with that feature request, as far as I remember. If you cast your vote there, that will be counted and will increase chances of implementing that feature sooner.
