Hi there, I’m experiencing strange behavior when attaching external drives.
For example, I will add a folder to a library location from an external drive (for example K), and scan for photos. Sometimes I will decide later to temporarily remove this folder from the library via the manage photo library locations in Tonfotos (causing all those pictures previously scanned to disappear from the library, as expected), with a plan to add them again later, but sometimes the drive will later mount with a different drive letter and that’s where the problem happens. Keep in mind this particular usage case is not when the photos remain in the library, but instead is when I have deliberately deleted that folder from the library with the plan to add it again later. When I try adding it again by clicking on the plus sign in the manage folder library locations screen, the folder seems to be added but the scanning does not happen. When I investigate, I see a message in the manage photo library window, that “the path does not exist”, and the path now has a different drive letter than the drive currently uses in the OS (and where I selected). Strangely, even though the drive now is connected to the computer as L: in the OS:, after re-adding it to the manage folder library screen, Tonfotos displays the drive letter in the manage photo library window back to the original K:, along with the message “the path does not exist”, even though I chose a folder in L.
I wonder if the Tonfotos database gets confused that it expects the folder to be attached to the drive letter that it originally had the first time it scanned the drive, even though I’ve deleted that folder from the library location screen, and re-added it. So after receiving the “path does not exist” message, if I click on “select new location”, and try and select the actual updated drive letter where the folder exists (again), Tonfotos won’t allow that choice to stick, and still displays “path does not exist” with the wrong (old) drive letter, even after I pick the correct (new) drive letter again.
In summary, when adding and removing external drives, if the drive letters change in the OS due to the number of devices attached, even though I remove the old library location and all those photos, and try to re-add it, the new drive letter and folder I does not “stick” in the manage photo libraries screen, even though the OS sees the new drive letter correctly.
This same behavior occurs when deleting the path that’s having problems, then closing Tonfotos, and attempting to add it again, it still registers with the OLD drive letter and the message “path does not exist” even though I have chosen via the add location the correct updated drive letter name and folder, it stubbornly displays the drive letter that the drive used the previous time that I added the folder, even though that drive is no longer connected via that letter, as is confirmed by the OS.
Many thanks for any insights!
