New formats for storing metadata
In the last two releases, we have completely redesigned the metadata subsystem and added two new file formats - PNG and TIFF. In total, Tonfotos can now write metadata (tags, locations, creation date, title, comment, face regions and people’s names) to JPEG, HEIC, PNG and TIFF files.
There are, of course, many more different file formats, but this set should cover all the basic needs of users when working with photographs:
- JPEG is without a doubt the leader in photo storage. Almost all digital photos are in this format.
- HEIC - a competitor to JPEG, gives a 15%-20% smaller file size with the same quality. It became popular because the iPhone now takes photos in this format by default
- TIFF is historically the main format in which scanners save photographs. Those who have digitized their paper archives almost certainly received them in this format.
- PNG is the most popular format for screenshots. Although it is almost never used for photos, your phones probably have a lot of PNG files.
Future plans
At the moment we have no plans to add other photo formats, unless they are very simple and will be a side effect of other improvements. However, we are thinking about adding the ability to change the metadata of videos in the mov/mp4 (QuickTime) format. This is the most popular format for recording video on phones at the moment, and also the only popular one that supports extended metadata, such as GPS, for example. Stay tuned.
