Are comments searchable?

I tested the idea of adding a comment “test comment” to a photo to see if the comment could be found by searching (as an alternative to finding photos with people whose face is not entirely visible). However, a question for you, are comments searchable? When I use the magnifying glass and search for “test comment” there are no results.

Tony No, currently comments and captions are not searchable, as well as camera models and some other metadata. Those are not stored in the database and only read from the file itself when you open it. In order to make it searchable, we will need to keep a copy of it in our internal database. Probably we will add this feature in the future.

Thanks Andrey. I’ve discovered that filenames are searchable in TonFotos and I’m in the habit of re-naming my photos with some keywords of the event in the photos.

Hi Andrey. I keep coming back to wanting to add comments to my photos. It’s great that comments are stored in the metadata and usable by other software. Having comments searchable would be really handy.

An example of a specific use. For photos for an event, say a trip, In Windows File Explorer ’ll Select All > Rename files to “November road trip 2025” (and File explorer sequentially numbers the photos). That makes those photos searchable by filename. For certain photos I’ll add a comment such as “Creekside Trail, Deserts National Park” to remember the name of a trail or place or something else significant. Being able to search by comments would be useful.
