Adding captions and searching them

I have a ton of photos from various trips and museums I have visited over the years. One of the things I would love to do is archive these photos in a tool that will allow me to create captions on each photo and then search those captions to find relevant photos.

I currently have all my photos saved in Google Photos, and it does not have that capability. You can add a description, but the text you enter is not indexed for search. I also have a Monument 2 for local photo storage, and it does not have that ability, either.

From what I gather, there’s no captioning option in Tonfotos, either, and the comment field in the EXIF is not searchable. Tagging gets me part of the way there, but not as far as I would like. Is adding captions and searching by them on the roadmap?

jtallent You are only partially correct. Captioning is there: https://community.tonfotos.com/d/128-version-130-text-comments-for-images

However, just like with other applicaitons you mentioned, those fields are not currently indexed. However, that can be added in the future if we will get enough requests for that. So far there was not many, unfortunately, so other things were a priority.

Thanks, Andrey! I had not been seeing those fields because my images were saved in HEIC. I’ll play around with them in JPG instead. Is there a procedure for voting on new features, or do you just watch what people talk about in the forums?

jtallent Well, that page is a little outdated. Since then we have added metadata editing for HEIC too. So you can do captions for your files as they are, no conversion needed.
