New dupliates removal dialog

I admit I don’t really understand how it works even though there have been huge improvements.
For example, I am notified of 2 duplicates and I can see the photo that constitutes the duplicate and where it is located. If I click on it, I do see the duplicate but I can’t go back and I don’t know where the other file is.
In my test, it’s easy, the file is just in the folder above. However, ideally it would have been necessary to delete the one in the folder above.
Actually, it would be useful to see the full path of the duplicate photo and the original and be able to choose which one to delete.
I would have liked to be able to delete everything at once because I have a lot more than I thought but usually in different folders. In my example, one of the photos was not in the right folder.

That is exactly what is this dialog doing. On your screenshot you have two buttons allowing you to chose where to delete. If you need more granularity, you should just go deeper on the left or right pane, depending where you want it.

I will try to explain. Tonfotos reported to me a duplicate flower photo located in the folder “2021-08-10- Les fleurs de mon jardin”. I could have deleted it, I understood that the software was quite reliable. When checking, I noticed that the other identical photo is in the folder “2021-08-20 - Ville de New York” and that I should have deleted it in “Ville de New York” and not in “Fleurs de mon jardin.” In fact, Tonfotos is perfectly suited if the photo and its duplicate are in the same folder. I don’t claim to be right, there might be something I’m missing. Tonfotos offers me to delete it in 2021 and in “2021-08-10- Les fleurs de mon jardin”. Too bad it didn’t offer me the 2 folders “2021-08-10- Les fleurs de mon jardin” and “2021-08-20 - Ville de New York”; I could have chosen. We could imagine a management with an option “in the same folder” and “in different folders”. For the ‘in the same folder’ option, we could almost delete without really looking. Well, I don’t know if I’m explaining myself well. On the other hand, this problem with duplicates I have never managed correctly even with software like ‘dupeguru’ or ‘Awesome duplicate photo finder’. I have a precise organization, but my partner does things with the photos and sometimes copies them into another. Your software showed me that I had 9,600 duplicate photos. That seems enormous, but I have a lot with a separation of family photos and other holidays, tourism, etc… I must have around 300,000, so this number of duplicates is not that huge but represents 15 gigabytes.

Tonfotos m’a signalé une photo de fleur en double située dans le dossier “2021-08-10- Les fleurs de mon jardin”.
J’aurais pu la supprimer, j’ai compris que le logiciel était assez fiable.
En controlant, je m’aperçois que l’autre photo identique est dans le dossier “2021-08-20 - Ville de New York” et que j’aurais du la supprimer dans “ville de New York” et non dans “fleurs de mon jardin”
En fait tonfotos est parfaitement adapté si la photo et son double sont dans le même dossier.
Je ne prétends pas avoir raison, il peut y avoir quelque chose qui m’échappe. Ton fotos me propose de supprimer dans 2021 et dans “2021-08-10- Les fleurs de mon jardin” dommage qu’il ne m’ait pas proposé les 2 dossiers “2021-08-10- Les fleurs de mon jardin” et “2021-08-20 - Ville de New York” , j’aurais pu choisir
On pourrait imaginer une gestion avec une option “dans le même dossier” et “dans des dossiers différents”. Pour l’option “dans le même dossier” on pourrait presque supprimer sans vraiment regarder.
Bon, je ne sais pas si je m’explique bien. Par contre ce problème de doublons je n’ai jamais réussi à le gérer correctement même avec des logiciels comme “dupeguru” ou “Awesome duplicate photo finder”. J’ai un classement précis mais ma conjointe fait des trucs sur les photos et parfois copie dans un autre. Votre logiciel m’a montré que j’avais 9600 photos en double. Cela parait énorme mais j’en ai beaucoup avec une séparation des photos familiales et les autres vacances tourisme etc… Je dois en avoir 300000 donc ce nombre de doublon n’est pas si énorme mais représente 15 gigas.

In fact, it might simply be a misunderstanding, I’m being asked to delete in “Mes_photos” or in “supprimer dans 2021-05-26 - co…”, which is a sub-subfolder.

So, I don’t know what this will delete and if I look I can’t undo it.

Alain22 Yes, I think this is purely misunderstanding, since as I read what you expect program to offer you in the message above, and this is exactly what it does. You compare two folder, one you chose on the left, one on the right. And then you basically have options to delete from the left folder or from the right folder. I hope this explanation makes sense. However, if you are in the situation where folder names that program offers you are too vague, it means current folder selection is just too broad. Go down in your selection to narrow it down.

Not easy to explain. The best would have been if you could take control of my PC, but I would have a hard time communicating with you in English.

Alain22 I think I know what you are talking about. Assuming you directory structure like that:

Photos
      - 2020
              - 2020-01-01
              ...
      - 2021
              - 2021-02-02
              ...
      ...

There is a copy of the photo that is placed in both 2020-01-01 and 2021-02-02,
On the left pane you are at the top of your navigation and selected Photos
On the right you are in Photos\2021 and there is a block on the right for 2021-02-02 showing that exact copy of the image.

With that setup you would see two buttons in that block: “Delete in Photos” and “Delete in 2021-02-02”. And I understand your confusion here. Button “Delete in 2021-02-02” is quite obvious, because copy is indeed there. However, “Delete in Photos” can be confusing, since the other copy is not in the Photos exactly, it is in one of its subfolders, other than ‘Photos\2021\2021-02-02’. However, button still say “Delete in Photos”. But in fact what it means, “Detele in All locations inside Photos and its subfolders, except one you selected on the right”.

I hope this clarifies confusion. Folder name on the buttons does not necessary mean the file is right in that folder, it can be in any its subfolders. And that is true for both folders actually. 2021-02-02 might actually also have some more subfolders and there can be duplicates located somewhere else in Photos, and button will say “Delete in 2021-02-02” but it will actually delete in all subfolders too.

From your explanation, if I want to delete the duplicate in the specific folder, I click on “delete in 2021-02–…”. If I want it to disappear from the other folders and keep it in that one, I click on “delete in my photos.”

We could accept this method if, after clicking delete, a window appeared showing the details of the files to be deleted and the paths of these deletions. Then we would confirm the deletion with certainty.

If this question only came up once, I would do it manually and move on. In my case, I often have the same uncertainty.

As soon as I have a moment, I’m going to back up the folders that might be affected and do some deletion tests to really understand what’s happening.

I understand that you want more control, but your suggestion is not the best way to do that. Maybe it will be fine for one or two files, but this dialog is designed for mass deletion, so this this is not an option.

However, you still get that certainty with current implementation. As I told multiple times in this tread -“just go deeper”. In my example in the previous post, what you need to do, you need to go inside Photos folder in the left by clicking “>”. This way you will be comparing with all subdolders of Photos separately, not just with everything inside Photos. If that is not detailed enough, go even deeper.

Also please don’t ingore Album function. If there is many photos in selected fodler, you can alway go and see them as an album by clicking the last one. Or you can click each photo individually and jump right to it, this way you will see all the details about specific file, including all the locations of its duplicates. Then you can back and open that dialog again.

To sum this up, I understand why you might need more information, but you can currently get this information already. However, there is no way we can put all that information into this small dialog and it still be useable. Sometimes you might need to make few more clicks, to get all the details you want.
