XMP files

Does Tonfotos make use of .xmp files in any way? As I understand it, these files are semi-industry standard. I note the .ini file that is created in each folder, and to be honest, I would prefer a single file in each folder, rather than a litter of little files. But I want to be sure before I do anything drastic.

Rick A. I guess you mean Sidecar XMP files. Yes, Tonfotos has partial support for Sidecar, it will read all metadata for files that come with Sidecar, but currently it does not edit or otherwise manipulates it. Wherever possible we prefer to write metadata changes inside files. Currenlty we support it for most popular formats (JPEG, HEIC, TIFF and PNG) and continously extend this support. However, for some files it will not make sense or is just impossible to support embedding XMP metadata, so eventually we will have to write metadate to Sidecar too. For example, that would be best option for most of the RAW formats.

However, ini files serve completely different purpose and they are not substitute for XMP (neither embedded or sidecar). Those are used to store data that is not supported by XMP format and is neccesary for backup and data synchonization purposes. Mostly that is information about faces (assined, not assigned and even deleted) and face association with people.

Thank you. So if I understand correctly, Tonfotos writes face ID directly into the JPG files (assuming Store Face in Image Metadata is enabled)? If that is correct, then if I were to rename a file using File Explorer, Tonfotos would see that photo under its new name and retain face ID?

Rick A. Not sure what you mean by Face ID in that context, but yes, Tonfotos will read faces and people names from the file after you renamed it, if those were stored inside. Just like any other app that supports reading faces metadata.
